Three times more women than men experience knee pain due to arthritis, but until
recently, a standard knee implant was used in both men and women. Now there are
knee implants that are made specifically to fit a woman’s body.
Because women’s hips are generally wider than men’s, the angle at which the thigh
bone connects the hip to the knee is several degrees different. These gender-specific
knees take this into account, making knees that are smaller, more contoured, and
offer a better fit for women than traditional implants.
